American Girl dolls announced its 2016 “Girl of the Year” doll on January 1st and some people on Twitter are not too happy at the company’s choice of girl. Her name is Lea Clark, and she is a “talented photographer with a love for animals” according to the press release. And she is also clearly white, a noticeably consistent choice for the winner for the last few years, with some exceptions.
Here is what some Twitter users were saying:
Though the company says Lea “embarks on a faraway adventure to Brazil”, as part of a family trip, she nevertheless appears very similar in appearance to past winners, such as Grace Thomas and Isabelle Palmer.
This is not the first time American Girl has come under scrutiny for their ethnic choices in doll design. In 2014, the company received a backlash when they pulled some of the non-white dolls from their lineup.
What do you think of the new Girl of the Year doll? Is the criticism accurate or nonsense?
